What do you mean make a copy? And how can I assign it? Do you have an article that explain it in a more technical way?
http://docs.joomla.org/Template_Development starts with 1.5 but most of it will work if you make it 1.6 compliant it will work with 2.5 might have to tweak it some.
look at the atomic template this is a very basic template you can use to create your own

well.. question is weather u can survive with only 15% for all the expenses... marketing will cost a lot... not to mention all other costs, servers ect. there is good reason why marketplaces take big commission, but they do take too much and joomla only marketplace would b nice, but will it b enough is question... other products should b supported if for nothing else to attract more people to the website.
maybe u could start with 35% commision and then over time and sales decrese to 20%
