Description

Joomla! User Group Toronto (JUGT) is an informal association of users of the Joomla! open source content management system. It draws its members from Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. The group began as a mailing list gathered from multiple sources, such as sign-up sheets at trade shows and computer fests. Since the beginning of 2009, the group has been holding regular pub nights, providing an opportunity for members to meet in a casual environment to discuss Joomla and to network. Starting in late 2009, the group is working to hold more formal meetings that feature presentations on specific topics. One of our goals is to build sufficient momentum to be able to organize and host a Joomla! Day in Toronto. Membership is open to anyone. There are no dues. There is no process for formally joining the group. There is no formal group structure. The group's "leadership" is anyone with the motivation to step up and make a contribution. There is always a need for more people willing to help out. If you're interested in helping out, get in touch with us via mail, Twitter, Facebook, or Linkedin.

Announcements

Thursday, 08 December 2011 by Alan Langford

The holiday season is upon us, and the venue for the December event is the Duke of York Pub downtown.

The Duke has been unusually busy over the past few months, and I suspect it will only be busier over the holidays. Normally it's possible to get by without a reservation, but I think that's not going to work this time.

So if you plan on showing up, please register before noon on Tuesday December 13th. I'll be calling it in early in the afternoon.

Alan, great job! Keele & Steeles = York U. I know you are joking, but possibilities... east Keeles on Steeles, towards Dufferin. We could also meet at the Yorkdale Apple Store -- hold a "setting up a dev environment" there... the Pickle Barrel there is fabulous (downstairs) but it's a restaurant -- if it's busy they will have trouble accomodating us, and hard for people to walk in and find us... Yeah, it's barren around there... for those not familiar with the area, it's easy to miss the road to that Holiday Inn. Yonge & Sheppard is my first JUGT meet-up, so I'm sentimental. We should try to hold a meet-up up here somewhere. Maybe send out an email asking people if they prefer Yonge/Sheppard or Yorkdale.

I wrote a small write-up with a pic of our Sep 14th meet-up at Scruffy Murphys in beautiful downtown Etobicoke.

Just a quick reminder that our next social event is this Wednesday at 7PM at the Duke of York Pub in downtown Toronto. Very accessible via TTC :)
Please spread the word around.

Announcing events here is good, but I think we should continue to try to make everything point to http://toronto.joomla.ca so we don't get fragmented. Someone should master all the APIs to make it so when we create an event on the site, notifications are posted to all these social satellite sites.

Agree with the prohibition on self-promotion. There are lots of other places for that anyway.

Now that this extension is GPL, maybe we should consider dropping it on the site and fostering the community there?

JomSocial is GPL now???? Great! I would love to see something like that on the JUGT site. I have been looking for extensions to do the posting of notifications from one site to another. Any ideas?

Yup, that.s what peeps.j.org is running, and you just know it's gotta be GPL before j.org is going to use it.

Should we announce the events/meetings here too? We have one coming up and all the notifications went out through the official site, FB and Linked In. The list is growing...

Agreed. Set it up now so there is no misunderstanding later. I'd like to see more sharing and NO shameless solicitation or self-promotion. Even things like "I just finished a xxxx widget for my client" is annoying if done too often.

I think it is yet to be seen if this will be an alternative to anything. I think this will be very effective for connecting Joomla folks in and around Toronto. Perhaps we should set some guidelines as to what we as a group want to see here.

Thanks for letting me know Flavia. I'll look into it. :)

So is this an alternative to Google Groups, Facebook or the JUGT website? I hope it doesn't get hijacked by people trying to sell their services.
