So far (touch wood) I have not experienced any problems with PHP5.3.x on any of the many sites I have on my servers. Obviously there are "depreciated" error messages being generated if you have error reporting switched on in php.ini but apart from that I have been fine. If you have any specific extensions that you might want testing then just use WAMP and test it locally.

Roy,
From my experience hosting companies can be very different. Some are very difficult to deal with. I prefer to to build a long term relationship with a good co so that they know me and my requirements.

While the hosting industry and market is full, to me they all look exatly the same, and they all look boring, very boring. Why can't be a funny experience an hosting website? We are thinking of letting people use our own company server to host their projects, and wokring right now at making up a page for this. just want it honest and funny...people don't need tons of GB or thousends email's address to create, at least not the average user...what ya think? whenever you look at an hosting site don't you think "mhh, just another hosting site..."?
BeatBeat on Monday, 17 May 2010 05:28

I quite agree Nick. Having unique selling points is rather difficult today. And even if you really have a stellar setup like we have set up for Joomlapolis.com (and that we are now offering too) with unique selling points like high-availability (according to HA definition) with really full redundancy and fail-safe setups (including fully doubled servers, rooms, data-centers and networks) and way more security than any average Joe, people won't understand the difference in the message compared to low-cost non-redundant over-crowded unlimited gigs unlimited bandwidth with 99.9999999999% uptime "guarantee", guaranteed support reply within 1 minute, none of which can obviously be achieved. I would love to see what a "fun" and still serious hosting would look like...what would you mean by "fun"?

I'm working on it..i'll be happy to share with you some more as soon as i've got something. While hosting is not our core activity we will just offer our internal test dedicated server to host theyr own website, we won't garantee anything apart of triying our best to make them happy, so small userbase, direct communication and following customer requirement in a way that make sense to them and to theyr website. I like your stellar swiss based hosting service very much, and i think i will suggest you on our page if they need to get more seroius about hosting. swiss rocks! looking forward to meet you at the JAB then!

As boring as it can sound, reliability and security must be the main features at any web hosting but it would be fun to have the ability to install any script I'd want to. the main reason many hostings give not to do it is security, is it really a security issue or it's just a little more work for the hosting?

Have you ever stumbled with those hostings that comes with joomla pre-loaded but once it's installed you can't install any extension, nor templates? I know the best work around is to avoid'em but I feel curiosity about the reasons of this odd behavior. Any idea?
BeatBeat on Monday, 17 May 2010 03:29

That's ususally a bad setting for ownership and permissions on a server. Keep away from such shared servers, most of them are fundamentally unsecure. You want your webserver to have your own permissions, not those of everybody else hosting on same server: any hacked site could then potentially alter your files as well...

Alvaro GuachilemaAlvaro Guachilema on Monday, 17 May 2010 18:10

Thanks Beat, that's what I wanted: An answer that let me understand the problem, not necessaryly a solution. Anyway, without the proper permissions I can't do anything, right?

We offer 1 click install of Joomla on our hosting services. We do not have any security issues with our servers and you can install extensions just fine. We also offer auto-update of Joomla for any new versions that are released.

Any one have a url for a good explanation on var_livesite to send noobs to when installing sites in sub dirs?
BeatBeat on Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:04

In Joomla 1.5, leave live_site empty in configuration.php , joomla figures out alone (and adapts), putting anything in it leads to errors often.

I would be interested to know what the fuss is about companies boasting Joomla support. Yes, it is good to spread the word about Joomla but the package will work with any good host. You pay for what you get and all hosts have limitations depending on your package. So what is special about these so called dedicated Joomla hosts?

I understand that not everyone is capable of running their on virtual server. I use Bytemark.co.uk for my hosting needs but any Joomla user IMO should have some level of knowledge. Those hosts that offer auto install packages are often the same ones that we see on support forums where the users run into problems. I believe this is simply because users don't go through the learning curve. So how many of these dedicated Joomla hosts also provide the required level of support so users can keep on top of updates and other problems.

Hi Phill,

You are right. To accommodate Joomla asks more knowledge than its simple installation and the understanding of its environment. It requires long and delicate additional skills to be acquired.

Few people are going to make the effort to learn the indispensable notions in management and server outsourcing because it is neither their job nor their priority. But the efficiency and the safety of a Joomla website requires some specific regulations dependent on the type of plateform, from mutualized to dedicated server.

As regards the classic hosting company, their pack Joomla is very often based on automatic setup routine (depends on the used panel). Very often late of 2 or 3 versions and, in what concerns us (French) always in English version... We return always to the same problem there: is it automatic or it requires a human intervention? It is what what makes the cost and the quality of the offer.

And the quality of the support ensues directly from it. It is virtually impossible for a machine to know what to update, at which moment and according to which, without creating conflicts, incompatibilities or possible dysfunctions between all the components of every unique site... The hosting company not only has to know its server environment but also all the Joomla environment!

I use 1and1 hosting for my joomla sites, haven't quite mastered the whole short url saga, I keep getting conflicting solutions when I read the forums. Please let me know if you have a solution besides switching hosting.
