That's a very interesting blog. I think with Joomla! a retailer can start an on-line business much faster and with lower expenses than what is discussed in that blog. The development, hosting and maintenance costs are much lower than using products and services from a specialized e-commerce company. Anyway, the author raises some very well though points in the blog that must be taken into account, both by the retailer and the Joomla! developer, before they get to an agreement.

I'm working with Craig from JHShop directly to do that exact thing. Craig is the developer of JHShop and we're using his cart exclusively (based on Opencart) for our Joomla SAAS offering, JumpStart. Since we have been working so closely, he's implemented several of our ideas and is developing on the system daily. Craig is also finishing up his ZEND testing so he'll be a certified developer and it shows in his coding!

I've also asked for a VM to JHShop converter to help out and he's considering it. If he hears from a few more people, he might be inclined. One of his customers converted a 9300 item shop (not sure if it was VM or not) and has had great success.

The JHShop changed from a per site license to a subscription which is a big plus for me because we now get priority support (and I do mean priority) and it helps keep the cash flowing to keep the project funded properly. Shops wanting $300-$500 are justified but, it's a bit easier to swallow at $30 a month for unlimited copies and support.

Can't beat that price for unlimited copies! The cart has more features than VM, the code is already MVC so, it's easier to customize and, Craig is even putting together a Vendor system for mall capabilities.

Good stuff.

@Ronni and @Eric: everyone knows about Virtuemart, because it was the only complete e-commerce solution for a long time. Now, I hear a lot of talk about Tienda, from Dioscouri.com. I just wanted to say: step up your marketing! If you are building these extensions, lots more people need to hear about that!

In a chat session with Craig this AM regarding the fast advancement of JHShop (jhshop.info) and what the future holds for it. Very exciting stuff!

We are constantly collecting interesting links about ecommerce topics - not only joomla related. Maybe it could be interesting for some group members: http://www.vm-expert.com/interesting-links
