What about a giant install fest, make a Joomla! site for a friend day, worldwide jug meeting or doc camp?
Or just everyone posting happy birthday images?
Or something else?

I know we've tried fundraising drives with Joomla before and it's not gone spectacularly well.
If we're going to do it, I'd like to see if we can get a few founding donors .... big companies, people or JUGs in the Joomla world who could help us get off to a good start.

Hey Elin -- I love the idea of doing something with the JUGs (of course!).
The JUGs should lead the way on this. Maybe we can do two things: a party, plus service to the community.
SERVICE
The idea would be to serve either the Joomla community at large or the local community in which you reside.
Things JUGs could do over the next year in honor of Joomla's 5th birthday:
- hold a Joomla Day
- hold a one day Joomla training event (Joomla User Group New England did JoomSki last year, a day of Joomla training and a day of skiing)
- Build a site for a local non-profit as a JUG
- Sponsor the forums for a day. Splash a header across the forums: "Today's questions are being answered by XYZ JUG".
- Installfests, Pizza Bugs and Fun, or other events that appeal to the group.
PARTY
World Usability Day might be a good model for this: http://www.worldusabilityday.org/
They try to schedule events, one per time zone, around the world. They are local events, but they're part of the larger usability community.
Of course, we're running out of time for synchronized parties scheduled between Aug 17 and Sept 16, but we could have each JUG have a party on a specified date and tap into some kind of worldwide video feed.
SWAG
Swag is always fun. When Adobe would hold worldwide launch parties (at least back in 2006 and 2007 when I was running our group), they'd send us a box of t-shirts to give away.
What if each JUG that sent in the details for their service for the next year received a box of Joomla birthday shirts from OSM? Most developers will do anything for a t-shirt. :-)
Finally, I like your idea of posting birthday images. We could do a huge photo gallery where everyone could post a photo with Joomla birthday greetings.
