Description

This is a group for people that are interested in Joomla and web accessibility. The idea of this group is to share Joomla related web accessibility resources that are available or techniques that will make Joomla sites WCAG 1.0 and WCAG 2.0 compliant.

I'm hoping this group makes people more aware of what web accessibility is and for those that don't know or understand can take advantage of the debate and discussion here.

Hi Andrea,

Many thanks! :-)

I think this could be a good place to start a more high traffic/visible group and it's great to here that you are also interested. So lets make it happen.

The Drupal guys have really developed the accessibility aspects of the system. But there are things about Joomla that are great, and I think its an easier system in many ways for non-techies. The good news is that to get the accessiblity stuff right is totally do-able if we get our heads together. Feel free to contact me (both yourself and Angie) via my mail address and maybe we could discuss what we think needs to be done? I'd be happy to have a a conf call you via Skype etc - anytime.

Congrats on getting your a11y patches in the core. Lets work towards getting the main admin template accessible!

So big +1 to an active a11y group.

I look forward to hearing from you (and indeed anyone else interested in this work)

All the best

Hi, Josh, welcome! Delighted to see you here.

There isn't an organized place where people meet for accessibility in Joomla, unfortunately. This would be a good place for it, though the traffic isn't high.

I have Drupal envy of what appears to be an active accessibility group there. Angie Radtke and I were talking earlier this month that we'd like to get an active group working on accessibility in Joomla.

Accessibility is important to Joomla and I haven't had much trouble getting my accessibility patches into core, though the accessible backend template (Hathor) is the alternative template rather than having accessibility built into the main admin template.

So, in short, it's a welcoming place for changes to happen, but we need to create the actual changes. I think an active group could make tremendous strides.

Hi y'all,

I have just joined this group, so firstly hello! Secondly, I am curious at to where the Joomla a11y efforts are at. There doesn't seem to be a lot of activity in this group and I hope that will change. I am a fan of Joomla, and (while it wasn't perfect) was impressed by the accessibility of the both the front end outputs and the backend when I first tested it with blind and vision impaired friends and colleagues several years ago.

While in some ways for blind users in particular, Drupal is more accessible, I would like to see this change and for Joomla to really hold its own. I like some of the changes in the new 1.6 version, the high contrast option is good. Anyhoo, I would like to help with furthering the cause of Joomla! a11y, and look forward to chatting, and learning from y'all.

Cheers

I love to know what people thing about suggestive search and intelligent 404 pages.

I think they're an element to making content more easy to find and also help users avoid and correcting their mistakes.

e.g. "did you mean ..... " or " We couldn't find xxx but this might be what you're looking for "
